Genesis 29:8-11

Genesis 29:8

וַ

ו: so, then, and consecutive that so that so, then
particle, conjunction

יֹּאמְרוּ

אמר: utter, say
verb, qal, prefix, third person, masculine, plural, vav-conv

לֹא

לֹא: no, not
particle, negative

נוּכַל

יכל: be able
verb, qal, prefix, first person, common, plural

The root of lk;Wn is lky be able (an irregular verb). Grammarians argue as to whether the stem here is an old Qal pasive or a Hofal (passive of Hifil) but neither the passiveness or causativeness is translated into English. This word is another illustration of w appearing in the position of a 1st y But here the w appears after a prefix pronoun [1 c. pl. prefix pronoun] rather than after a stem preformative as in ar"AN (Gen.28:17) [where the n is a sign of Nifal]

Gen.29:8

Wps.a'(yE

3 m. pl. Nifal prefix

You saw the same stem and form in rmea'yE and ha,r"yE (Gen.22:14). The reason that Wps.a'(yE has a shewa under the s rather than a sere is that the length of the word has caused this syllable to shorten. Note the meteg after the vowel qamets a'( It is there to make sure you separate the syllables and sound the shewa, and indicates the vowel is not a qamets hatuf. You should hear four syllables in this word.

הִשְׁקִינוּ

שׁקה: cause to drink water, give to drink
verb, hiphil, affix, first person, common, plural

Glance back to Wqv.h; (Gen.29:7) The summary there should be of value in determining the stem and form of this verb. y appears between the two strong letters and affix pronoun in some PGN’s of 3rd h verbs. The atnach  +just before WnyqIv.hiw> is a signal that the conditional rv,a] d[; no longer applies, and so we introduce this verb by saying that we may

עוֹדֶנּוּ

עוֹד: a going round, continuance still, yet, again, besides
particle, adverb with third person, masculine, singular suffix

dA[ + suffix. Put together it becomes while he was still…  How do we know that the suffix is 3 m.sg. and not 1 c. pl? It could be either, but 90% of the time it’s 3 m. sg. and that PGN fits the context better. The construction of WNd,A[ is like that in yNIM,mi (Gen.22:12), hN"n<T.a, (Gen.28:13) and WNr,F.[;a] (Gen.28:22).

מְדַבֵּר

דּבר: speak
verb, piel, participle, masculine, singular

All participles except those in the Qal and Nifal begin with m The dagesh in the middle root letter and the shewa under the preformative are indicators of the stem here. That there is no extra endiNG should signify to you the gender and number.

עִמָּם

עִם: with
particle, preposition with third person, masculine, plural suffix

Constructed like %M'[I (Gen.28:15). Some prepositions take ~h, as the 3 m. pl suffix as in ~h,lea] and some, like this one, take only ~

ו: so, then, and consecutive that so that so, then
particle, conjunction

יָּגֶל

גּלל: roll, roll away
verb, qal, prefix, third person, masculine, singular, vav-conv

This verb appears in the Qal affix form Wll]g"w> in Gen.29:3 and 8. Here it is a Qal prefix. The Qamets under the prefix pronoun makes it look like a hollow verb (6.1a), and in some forms geminates often masquerade as hollow verbs. Why is the second l missing? Geminates do not always show the doubled root letter.

יַּשְׁקְ

שׁקה: cause to drink water, give to drink
verb, hiphil, prefix, third person, masculine, singular, vav-conv

See Wqv.y: (Gen.29:2) for the stem. There the third root letter h is missing because of the prefix complement. Here it is missing because this is shortened form with vav conversive. The 3 m. sg. Hifil prefix form without vav conversive is hq,v.y:

יִּשַּׁק

נשׁק: kiss

Look carefully. Where is the missing root letter? This is not a form of hqv If you mix up these two verbs you will have Jacob watering Rachel and kissing the sheep!
